2001 MORELLI LANE CHARDONNAY
Russian River Valley, Estate Bottled

The Wine
The 2001 Morelli Lane is our second vintage from this incredible Green Valley vineyard. Pleasant aromas of Myers lemon, mineral, floral notes and vanilla bean entice you to take the first sip. Reminiscent of a true White Burgundy, the 2001 Morelli Lane is a lean style Chardonnay, with pear, green apple, mineral and Myers lemon following through on the palate, leading to a long, lingering finish.

The Vineyards
Morelli Lane Vineyard, planted to chardonnay, pinot noir and some old vine zinfandel is located at the top of a ridge just north of the town of Occidental on the far western edge of the Russian River appellation. This century-old vineyard was left unfarmed for several years until the Dutton’s revived and re-planted parts of the vineyard in 1995. The cool coastal site of Morelli Lane produces an exquisite French style chardonnay with notes of stone fruit, and lemon with a bright acidic foundation.

The Winemaking
The chardonnay fruit is gently pressed in whole clusters, settled for 24 hours and racked into barrels. Individual lots are barrel fermented using a combination of indigenous and inoculated yeasts. Undergoing malolactic fermentation, the lees are stirred twice monthly. The chardonnay is aged in French oak barrels chosen by our winemaker to emphasize the fruit and vineyard characteristics of the wine rather than showcasing the oak itself. Each barrel is specifically chosen for the Morelli Vineyard Chardonnay in late spring. The wine is blended and allowed to rest in barrel settle and marry. This final lot is bottled unfiltered in early winter after approximately 14 months in the barrel.
