2004 CHERRY RIDGE SYRAH
The Wine
This extra-ordinary cool-climate syrah exhibits spicy floral and herbal aromas with scents of blackberry, blueberry, cocoa and mint. A full-bodied wine and forward opulent flavor of dark berries coats the palate while suggesting mouthwatering flavors of bittersweet chocolate and espresso. Full tannins lead the way to a satiny smooth and delightful finish, enticing yet another sip.
The Vineyard
Cherry Ridge Vineyard, planted in 1991 is an east facing vineyard and planted in one of the coolest sections of the Green Valley. The soil consists of the traditional Gold Ridge Soil, which is prominent in the Green Valley and Russian River Valley. Subject to Sonoma Coasts' fog funneling through the Green Valley, this vineyard-designated wine expresses the terroir of a rare cool climate syrah. Cheerful and spicy flavors intertwined with bold dark fruits show focus while subtly combining sweet notes of chocolate and cocoa.
The Winemaking
Upon arrival from an early morning harvest, the fruit from Cherry Ridge Vineyard is de-stemmed and cold-soaked. Primary fermentations take place in small, open top tanks and manually punched down up to four times per day. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and racked into French and American oak to age. Upon completion of secondary fermentation in barrel, each barrel is tasted and selected for the Cherry Ridge Vineyard designated wine. Eight barrels of the final blend rested for 14 months and was bottled in January 2006 with minimal processing.
